Accessibility

Accessibility is a core value of the Disability Reading Challenge. Because this initiative centers disabled stories, disabled authors, and disabled community, it’s important that participation is as accessible and welcoming as possible. Accessibility is an ongoing practice — something I am committed to learning, improving, and evolving over time.

Below is an overview of the accessibility considerations woven into this challenge, along with ways you can reach out if you encounter barriers or want to suggest improvements.

Website Accessibility

I aim to make this website usable and readable for as many people as possible. Current practices include:

  • Clear, consistent page structure and navigation
  • High-contrast text and backgrounds
  • Readable font sizes and generous spacing
  • Descriptive link text rather than “click here”
  • Alternative text for images whenever possible
  • Avoiding flashing or rapidly animated content
  • A responsive layout that works on mobile, tablet, and desktop

If you notice anything on this site that makes it difficult to access information, please let me know — I’m happy to make adjustments.

🧵 Community Accessibility

Accessibility also extends to the way the challenge is run across platforms.

Discord Community

  • Image descriptions included for graphics whenever possible
  • Multiple channels for different access needs (text-only discussion, prompts, book recs, etc.)
  • Low-pressure participation — spaces for both active and quiet community members
  • Option to engage asynchronously instead of in real-time

StoryGraph Challenge

StoryGraph allows you to browse books by prompt, explore community-submitted picks, and track reading at your own pace. Any format counts, including audiobooks, ebooks, and graphic formats.

Monthly Book Club

Book club meetings are:

  • Held over Zoom
  • Caption-supported (via Zoom auto-captions)
  • Discussion-based rather than lecture-style
  • Low-pressure, with no expectation to speak if you don’t want to
  • Summarized in Discord afterward for those who cannot attend

If you require additional support for book club attendance, please reach out in advance.

📚 Reading Accessibility

The challenge embraces all reading formats, including:

  • Audiobooks
  • Ebooks and large-print options
  • Graphic novels and comics
  • Memoirs in verse
  • Assistive technology (screen readers, text-to-speech, etc.)

You are encouraged to choose the format that best meets your access needs. All formats are equally valid.

🌱 Flexible Participation

Accessibility is also about honoring time, energy, and capacity. That’s why:

  • You are not expected to read every prompt
  • You can join at any time
  • You can participate quietly or actively
  • You can read one book or twelve — your level of involvement does not make you more or less of a reader

This challenge is designed to meet you where you are.

💬 Feedback and Access Requests

Accessibility is a collaborative process. If you encounter barriers, have suggestions, or need accommodations, please reach out.

I welcome feedback from all participants and will do my best to continue making this challenge a space that supports and honors disabled readers and community.
